Pick Tapping (p??k t?p??), also known as pick trilling, is a technique for playing the guitar that involves rapidly tapping notes on the fretboard with the edge of the pick. Pick tapping is used by players known for their fast paced guitar playing, because it enables extremely fast successions of notes to be played on the guitar.

While it is possible to tap with the fingers of either hand, pick tapping allows the guitar player to trill faster through a technique known as “vibrating” the wrist, which in effect is moving the wrist in a motion like it is seizing up. The pick tapping technique always involves playing the notes legato, quite rapidly.

The Pull-Off (p??l- ??f) is a term that is used to describe a technique that allows the guitar player to play multiple notes on the same string without strumming more than once. To perform a pull-off, the player must already be fretting a string with one finger. The other finger must be on one of the upper frets. The pull-off is completed when the player removes the upper finger, while still holding the finger that is behind the pull-off finger.

It does not matter how far ahead the pull-off finger is from the fretting finger., although most players typically perform a pull off with a distance of three frets.

Shredding (?r?d?? ) is a term used to describe a method of guitar playing in which the musician executes major, minor, and pentatonic scales in a lighting fast fashion. The musician moves his hand from the bottom of the neck (the lower tones) to the top of the neck (the higher tones) as quickly as he/she can to play the full range of notes available on the neck. Shredding usually it ends with a faster than normal vibrato with the use of the tremolo, or ‘whammy’ bar. Typically, this style of playing is not found in old school rock, but is widely seen in metal.

String Skipping (str??? sk??p??) is a technique where the guitar player disrupts the flow of an improvisation or constructed solo by skipping down or up a string. For example, if a player is playing a solo that starts on the G-string, he can skip the B string and instead play on the E string. Therefore, string skipping is exactly what it sounds like.

String skipping is usually only used during a solo. Moreover, many players skip more than one string for an extreme effect. Many jazz players skip three or more strings when playing sequences that contain fast chord changes. Metal players, however, typically only skip one or two strings at a time.

Tambour (tambour) is a technique used heavily in Latin and classical guitar, where the guitarist rapidly beats the strings of the chord, generally located immediately inside the bridge, with the flat side of the right hand. The desired effect of this technique is to produce percussive sounds, similar to a snare drum, which permits the strings to vibrate. While using tambour, a range of tones can be created by striking varied distances from the bridge with distinct parts of the right hand or thumb. Performed incorrectly, the tambour technique can instead cause the sound of the strings to be dampened.

Tapping (t?p??) is a term that describes a specific playing technique, where instead of strumming, players use the pressure from their right hand to push down on the strings that they want to sound. Tapping is accomplished easiest by performing a hammer-on with the fretting hand, and one additional hammer-on with the strumming hand. Therefore, tapping is usually just two hammer-ons performed simultaneously. Most players use their strumming hand’s index finger, but some players find it comfortable to use their middle finger.
