Alice in Chains was formed as grunge music was beginning. In 1987, Jerry Cantrell formed the band with singer Layne Staley, and soon afterward, the duo added Sean Kinney on drums and Mike Starr on bass. Mike Starr was later replaced with bassist Mike Inez. Although some of the music written and performed by Alice in Chains can be considered grunge music, some of the band’s music has more of a heavy metal sound, while other songs by the band fit into the acoustic genre. The band’s influences include metal, punk, funk and rock & roll. Hits and well-known songs include “Man in the Box,” from their first album, Facelift, and “Would,” from the Singles soundtrack. Other hits are “Them Bones,” “Rooster,” and “Down in a Hole” from their second album, Dirt, and “I Stay Away” and “No Excuses” from their third album, Jar of Flies. They also released a album simply titled “Alice in Chains” that included the popular song “Heaven Beside You.”

Johnny Cash is a well-known country artist who flourished between the 1950s and the early 21st century. He remained successful and continued to record until his death in 2003. Throughout his career he has performed as a solo artist as well as with his wife, June Carter Cash, and with backup bands that added bass and lead guitar elements to Johnny’s vocals and rhythm guitar.

Although Johnny Cash began singing and songwriting when he was just a child, he didn’t formally get involved with a band until he moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 1954. He formed his first band with Luther Perkins, who played guitar, and Marshall Grant, who played bass. The style of their early music was rockabilly, and Johnny’s early musical influences included gospel music and popular country music that was played on the radio as well as music by Irish artist Dennis Day.

Formed in Southern California in 1996, alternative metal band Linkin Park quickly rose to the top of the rock / hip-hop genre made popular by Korn and Limp Bizkit. The band mixes DJ skills with buzz-heavy guitars that has set itself apart from its predecessors. Xero, Linkin Park’s predecessor formed in1996, was met with little interest. In 1998, the band briefly changed its name to Hybrid Theory, before finallysettling on Linkin Park. Linkin Park signed with Warner Brothers in 1999 and has released five studio albums. They have achieved international fame and multi-platinum success with their debut album,Hybrid Theory. Linkin Park’s second release, Meteora, topped the 2003 Billboard Top 200 chart andcontinued their nu / rap metal successes.

Lead vocalist and co-writer Chester Bennington joined Linkin Park in 1999. Originally from Arizona, his post-grunge, aggressive vocals elevated Linkin Park above its nu grunge contemporaries.

Brad Delson, the lead guitarist for Linkin Park, graduated from UCLA, where he met bassist David Farrell. Delson has played over 60 guitars in his time, but his signature instrument is the PRS Custom 24. He has also playedthe Ibanez RG7620 (a seven string guitar) and a customized black Ibanez AX120.
