Avant-Garde Jazz
Avant-Garde Jazz (əvánt- gárd ǰǽz) is a style of music that is characterized by the improvisation and the composition of jazz music. This form of jazz differs from the traditional sound of Jazz and allows for a more free-form style of music. While the notes may be planned, they are left open for improvisation to occur during a performance. Miles Davis and John Coltrane were some of the first artists to embrace this style. During the 90s, Avant-garde Jazz saw a revival with David Boykin and artists like Nicole Mitchell.
