Indie Rock
Indie Rock generally refers to rock music produced and distributed by an independent label as opposed to a major record label. Indie stands for independent. Indie music of all genres became popular with the rise of independent college radio stations and internet music distribution. The term “independent” or “indie” can also describe musicians that started out on an independent label and later signed with a major label. As a style, indie rock describes bands that play rock music according to their own style rather than a style created to fit in with current industry standards. Some well-known bands that play indie rock or started out on an indie rock label include Death Cab for Cutie, The Smiths, The Cure, The Killers, Modest Mouse, The Shins, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Decemberists.
