Ibanez has a rich and storied history of making quality electric and acoustic guitars. Going all the way back to 1908, Ibanez’s were some of the first Japanese guitars to arrive on the US market. After several years of exporting to both the United States and Europe, Ibanez opened their first storefront opened in Philadelphia in the early 1960’s. Propelled by a sense of ingenuity and creativity that broke the mold of traditional guitar design, Ibanez’s funky & daring designs helped to revolutionize both the rock and jazz guitar markets.
Artist line; a solid body design which gained notoriety when Bob Weir of The Grateful Dead used the Ibanez 2681 prototype in the recording the 1975 album, Blues for Allah. Today, this vintage icon is a prized collector’s item. The Iceman, originally called Artist 2663, was the choice of Paul Stanley of KISS throughout the late 1970s and again in the early 90s.
George Benson began working with Ibanez. Together they released the first of the George Benson Signature series. In 2009 the GB30TH was released as a limited edition to honor 30 years of successful collaboration.
At a time when many musicians were building their own guitars to achieve a customized result, the Ibanez name was creating a buzz in rock and jazz circles. Inspired to create exceptional guitars and raise the bar on instrument quality standards, Ibanez began to seek the input of musicians such as Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert and George Benson. This collaboration resulted in the JS, RG, JEM and S models. Vai, Satriani, Gilbert and Benson continue to use Ibanez guitars and collaborate on currently available signature editions. These distinguished pieces are still considered the standard of instrumental and hard rock and remain in production.
