Pete Wentz and Joe Trohman formed Fall Out Boy in 2001. They were inspired by bands like The Smiths, Descendents, and Green Day. During the band’s first two concerts, they had no formal name, so they let the audience shout out name ideas for the band.
 
Patrick Stump performs the lead vocals for the band and also plays guitar. Originally, he auditioned as the drummer but his impressive voice led to him becoming the lead singer. Although he sings with a punk rock band, he is known for his soulful sound that is suitable for R&B music. He has a vocal range of a tenor and baritone plus falsetto which spans over two octaves.
 
Peter Wentz plays the bass guitar has well as provides backing vocals for the band. Wentz started his musical career by playing the piano in high school. Most of Fall Out Boy songs are written by Wentz. He is known to play the Squier Pete Wentz Signature P Bass guitar at concerts.
 
Joe Trohman also provides backing vocals as well as guitars for the band. He has his own Signature guitar, the Joe Trohman Telecaster, which was made by Squier Guitars by Fender.  Trohman plays a variety of guitars including bass when the song calls for it.
 
Andy Hurley is the only, non-original member of the band. He replaced drummer Mike Pareskuwicz in 2003. He bases his sound on bands like The Like, Slayer, and Metallica and is endorsed by Sabian cymbals, Vic Firth drumsticks, and C&C Custom drums. Although his style of percussion playing is what he is best known for, his first instrument was the saxophone in the high school band.
 
To sound like Fall Out Boy, you need to combine both pop punk and punk rock sounds. The band also uses a wide range of instrumentation and styles to deliver hit songs. The sound of Fall Out Boy can easily be reproduced by both the amateur and the experienced guitar player.
