Afro-Beat
Afro-Beat (ǽfro- bít) is a style of music that came from Nigeria in the 60s. Fela Kuti, a bandleader who owned a club called the Afro-Shrine, created it. This style of music relies heavily on percussion and the use of vocals. It mixes traditional Yoruba styles of music with Jazz, Funk, and chanting. Its complex rhythms are often played out through big bands, featuring guitars, drums, pianos, and many other instruments, often totaling as many as 15 to 30 musical instruments. Many of the Jazz artists of today have been influenced by the styles of Afro-beat music.
