Alternative
Alternative (ɔltə́rnətɪv) is a genre of music that is also called Alternative Rock. This style was formed from the independent music scene that arrived in the 80s. It saw its biggest levels of popularity in the 90s, seeing a mass appeal. The term Alternative is often used to describe music that comes from the underground style, yet gains mainstream popularity. Beginning with New Order, Public Image Limited, and the Sugarcubes, the sound evolved into groups like Nirvana, The Strokes, and My Chemical Romance. Though the style has declined in popularity since the late 90s, it has seen a recent revival in the last couple of years. The sound features a range of guitar riffs and catchy vocals that refuse to bow to mainstream media.
