queen band

The band Queen formed in 1970 by Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon, and Roger Taylor. Their sound started out as progressive rock, heavy metal, and hard rock, but gradually the sound turned more conventional and radio-friendly. As of 2013, current band members include May and Taylor.

Brian May is considered to be the one responsible for the guitars in Queen. Since he started in the 70s, he has remained true to his own sound. He has chosen to stick with a Vox amp for years and often is associated with the custom-built “Red Special.” He has also been known to play a Gibson acoustic guitar, Gibson Les Paul guitar, and a Fly V guitar. May typically relies on his amp and guitar to shape his tone but occasionally will use special effects. In addition to playing the guitar for Queen, May is also plays the keyboards, piano, and provides vocals.

Roger Taylor plays the drums, rhythm guitar, percussion, and tambourine. He also adds to the vocals when needed. Taylor is considered to be one of the most influential rock drummers of the 70s and 80s due to his big, unique sound when he plays. He has been quoted as saying his main rock drummer influence was that of the late John Bonham who played with Led Zeppelin.

To sound like Queen, you will need to hook your guitar up to a Vox amp. Adjust the screamer to a low setting and use a treble booster to get the higher gain tone that you hear in Queen’s music. The music found on any of the fifteen studio albums released by Queen can easily be reproduced by the beginner and the experienced guitar player.
