The world will forever be happy that Tim McGraw did not follow in his father’s (Tug McGraw) footsteps and become a baseball player. Instead, McGraw found his own niche in the world by becoming a country singer. In addition to being a fabulous singer, songwriter, and actor, Tim can play a mean guitar.
Tim’s first studio album was released in 1993. He released 11 more studio albums between 1994 and 2013. On his latest album, Two Lanes of Freedom, McGraw pushes the boundaries on what is considered country music. He combines new contemporary sounds with his traditional country sounds. He also includes some piano pop, bluegrass, and hip hop to the album.
His guitar of choice is a Taylor, but he is also known to play a Rickenbacker and a Gibson. McGraw likes to incorporate guitar sounds to enhance his songs. He doesn’t play the guitar much when he is touring because he moves around the stage so much that it’s difficult to hold a guitar and run from one side of the stage to another. The easiest way to sound like Tim McGraw is to strum the chords more than once, meaning in a downstroke and an up stroke.
Darren Smith has been joining McGraw on the road for 20 plus years. He likes to play Gibson, PRS, and Gretsch guitars. Smith has been using the pedalboard for years. If you want to sound like Smith or McGraw when you play, you need to listen to their style of play. The chords often used are easily reproduced.
Keep Rockin’!!!
