The sound of Train includes pop rock, roots rock, soft rock, adult alternative, and blues rock. Their unique sound is a blend of all the members harmonizing together. All three of the current band members, Pat Monahan, Jimmy Stafford, and Scott Underwood, have been performing together since 1994.
 
Pat Monaho is the lead man for Train. He provides the leading vocals as well as playing percussion instruments, harmonica, trumpet, saxophone, vibraphone, megaphone, and acoustic guitar. In 2007, when Train was on hiatus, Pat released his first solo album, Last of Seven. After the release of his solo album, he went on a small, intimate acoustic tour.
 
Jimmy Stafford plays not only the guitar but also the mandolin, ukulele, and slide guitar. He is also known to provide backing vocals for the band. Stafford began playing the guitar when he was only 12 years old. The Valvetronix AD120VT is an important element in the sound that Jimmy produces. It helps him find the ideal sound for the song he is performing.
 
Scott Underwood plays the drums, percussion, keyboard, and piano for Train. Once Underwood picked up his first pair of drumsticks at the age of 11, he hasn’t put them down. Scott has been quoted as saying the hiatus the band took made them better. He says that once they got back together, the music they were making was even better than what it was before.
 
To sound like Train you need to use a variety of instruments. Their current sound is more upbeat than it once was. The beginner and the experienced guitar player can easily reproduce the music on the bands last album.
