baauer harlem shake

Harlem Shake by Baauer debuted at #1 on the Hot 100 chart for the week of March 2, 2013. The song was originally released as a free digital download May 2012. It was later released on January 8, 2012 as an iTunes download. The song has prompted hundreds of people to upload videos for the song on YouTube. The videos mostly consist of people dancing humorously or erratically. Baauer has said the song is a fun, goofy song.

The line ‘then do the Harlem shake’ is taken from Plastic Little’s 2001 song ‘Miller Time’. However, Baauer added peculiar sounds to make his song stand out from other songs. Sounds used include harsh snares, growling lions, mechanical bassline, and Dutch house synth riffs. The song is a high tempo, hip hop and dance music drop song.

The dance, Harlem Shake, was started in the early 1980s by Al B. The dance quickly grew beyond the Harlem neighborhood. In 2001, G. Dep featured the Harlem Shake in ‘Let’s Get It’ music video. The dance that takes place in Baauer’s video is not the original Harlem Shake dance.

Baauer has been working on an EP with LuckyMe Records which is set to be released sometime in 2013. He is also scheduled to appear at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 2013.
