Coming in this week at number one on the Billboard 200 rock list is Linkin Park’s, “Burn it Down.” Loaded with ethereal sounds and strong power chords, Burn it Down blends the new Linkin Park sound found on their latest album, Living Things, with their more well-known rock and metal elements from what feels like the distant past.
While not being particularly heavy, Burn it Down still manages to give fans a nostalgicpeek into the anger and angst that sold their Hybrid Theory album back in the early2000’s. The band is clearly doing something different now, continuing to alter their sound into something that appears to be a far cry from their nu metal days. Nevertheless, the members of Linkin Park say they feel comfortable with their new sound, describing their music as finally feeling like “familiar territory.”
Linkin Park has dominated the charts before with their well-received album, Minutes to Midnight, and it’s no surprise that they still “got it,” even if “it” is markedly different from what it used to be. Burn it Down is seeing its 12th week on the charts, and continues to hold the previous week’s position at number 1.
While old-school Linkin Park fans may frown upon the musical evolution of the band, the reception for Burn it Down (and Living Things in general) appears to positive. The song may have a different feel to it, but still allows listeners to become encased in Chester Bennington’s compelling and powerful lyrics, and also boasts Mike Shinoda’s signature rapping… always a recipe for success.
